Air New Zealand Plays Cuddle Cupid with Five Days of Giveaways

Apple starts selling unlocked iPhone 6

T-Mobile's contract-free iPhone has been available for $650 on Apple's online store since the iPhone 6 went on sale in September.

Still, competition is fierce in the wireless market, and some cell phone companies are offering iPhones for no money down in exchange for higher-than-average monthly bills.

'If You Were to Give Me a Million Dollars, Would It Do Any Good?'

I have a question for everyone to ponder. It's not one that hasn't been purposed before. But the answer thus far seems to be a little ambiguous.

The scenario here is: If you were to give me a million dollars, would it do any good?

There seems to be a divided camp on this answer.



Some of you would say that no, in fact, it wouldn't do me any good.

Why? Because of several reasons, it seems:

1) The taxes on a million dollars would be quite expensive.

2) The money would only be squandered or otherwise wasted, frivolously spent by someone who couldn't handle the responsibility of hard work and investing in the future.

3) It wouldn't be enough. The begging for handouts and freebees that other hardworking individuals have earned for themselves and were also gracious enough to share wouldn't stop there. More would be demanded to satisfy you, feeding your dependency on others.

4) We'd only be creating a monster, another of the leaches of society, those individuals with the audacity to feel so privileged in this life that everything must be free to them, creating the beggars we loath.

The other side of this is that yes, it would do a lot of good. Why?

1) Because I'd be able to pay off any debts, create financial security for my family and my loved ones, put my children and my grandchildren through college, set up savings and other investments so that we, and the future generations of us, don't have the worries that come with financial insecurities.

2) Because I'd be able to invest the money into my dreams and passions in life. Maybe it's to begin my own business. That bakery, restaurant, or welding shop of your dreams then becomes an obtainable reality, one that you could now actually materialize with the capital at hand.

3) Because life and the things within it aren't cheap. Maybe it's to buy a new home to support the size of your family and it's needs. Maybe it's to invest in much-needed home repairs that were too expensive before, like a new roof to fix a leaky one. Maybe the need is to repair or replace a vehicle that's broken down, or to buy one for the first time. Maybe it's medical bills or expensive medical equipment or treatments not covered by other means.

4) Because I could do a lot of good with it: help others, be charitable and serve mankind by helping others in need, others who have also struggled along the same life paths, by creating financial means and access for those less fortunate, and maybe by funding or by the ability to purchase a needed element, like wheelchairs for the disabled who are too poor, or food for those who cannot afford a meal. It would allow me to be able to show compassion to so many others because of the compassion that was bestowed onto me.

Pay-it-forward, if you will.

So which is the right answer here? If you were to give me a million dollars, would it do any good? Yes or no?

As it turns out, both answers here are correct.

It depends on the person.

If you are the compassionate, charitable, pay-it-forward type, then yes, a million bucks would do a lot of good, and not just for the recipient, but for those other individuals they influence as well.

They are the ones to open their ground-floor businesses or charitable organizations and are willing, out of love, compassion given what they have had to endure, and passion for what they want do to, to put in every ounce of blood, sweat, and tears into their work simply because they love what they do and want to see a change in the world.

Unfortunately there are those people whom the million dollars wouldn't help.

They are the type that will try to take where they can. The darker side of humanity shows us there are people out there willing to rob, cheat, and steal for their every need instead of putting forth an honest effort to obtain it themselves. But that's unavoidable for any applicable situation.

These are also the individuals who squander what they have managed to gather, or hoard what they have gained (some to overtly excessive proportions) with no care for how it would affect others who could benefit from the same resources. They have no compassion, no empathy towards any, even at the expense of another human's well-being and survival.

Right now, our society values the hard worker, condemning the takers. But that seems to only ring true as sentiment.

We as a society seem to have missed the mark entirely.

We now see a piece of paper as the end all and be all of life. This object has become more important than humanity.

We idolize it and those who have hoarded it.

Money, meant to be obtainable by all, became a way to influence, trade, justify, condone, and conduct the destructive behaviors and practices that are produced by the greed, to have as much of it as one can get their hands on.

We celebrate record profits for a noted person, business, or corporate entity. The status of someone's bank statements and Forbes rankings are the milestones of success and are used to rule over humanity instead of for the betterment humanity.

Personally, I would think the mark of success should be redefined, and so should the original question.

"If I gave you a million dollars, would it do any good?"

But here's the problem with it.

Apparently it isn't actually a question anyway but a rhetorical thought used to justify our personal greed while releasing ourselves from any guilt for not helping out another human being in need.

It's not a question at all but a way to lord our successes over the less fortunate. It's showing off the tools you have, knowing what it can be used for, while explaining why you have to keep them locked away from others, denying its use and the very purpose it was created for.

Also, assuming the one in need is lazy is just lazy in itself.

It's a rationale we employ to separate ourselves from the less fortunate. We want to protect ourselves from the hardships life has, trying to keep them from happening to us ourselves.

This has become a lifestyle society has adapted to, one that is backwards and highly detrimental to humanity as a whole. It needs to stop now.

But the plights of your fellow man are not your problem, right? The problem is too big to do anything about, right? Wrong.

Most people think that you have to participate in dodgy surveys or enrol for free stuff on even dodgier websites but with this, you just ask the company yourself. Or you may think that it is a little degrading to ask them for free stuff, but trust me, they have so many products to give away that they will be glad you did ask! Some companies may not reply at all and some might, it depends a little on luck, but you are bound to get something. Some things you could get are:

How Did I Do It?

I recently encountered the $39 dollar experiment which was conducted by Tom Locke. In this experiment, he wrote to 100 companies asking them for free products. It appears that you can be sent free products from a company by saying how much you enjoy using their products and you would like to express how much of a fan you are of their amazing creations. He received many items and products from a variety of companies, I was impressed. I wanted to try this out for myself.

So, I tried it out with a few companies, I wrote them a letter, I'll explain how exactly below and waited. One day, a huge package arrived in the post and I received so many products from one company. Some companies never wrote back to me or sent anything, I expected that. But, I realized that it isn't all that difficult to get some free products.

I will now explain how you can do it too.



1. Make A List Of Companies

The very first thing you have to do is to make a list of the companies you want to write to, you can write to one or two or you can write to four or five, the choice is yours. Look at items in your cupboard, bathroom and office, get the names of these companies. Here are a selection of companies that you can write to, but remember, these companies are not guaranteed to send you samples, you will have to see for yourself. If I have written to a company and received free products, I'll let you know.

Make Up, Perfume - Are you interested in makeup or perfume? Try writing to makeup companies for some samples such as: Clinique, Rimmel, Carma Labs (others have received products from Carma Labs, I don't live in America so I couldn't contact them), Chap Stick, Burts Bees, Lush etc.Food - Kraft, Celestial Seasonings, Twinnings, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Wrigleys. What a freeture is not can be summed up in a few words. A freeture is not something that its recipient has to pay for! Originally a freeture was defined as an added-value, enhancement or free feature item which, when added to product/service promotional packages increases the likelihood of a sale. That definition remains intact and has been more clearly defined through additional and updated information. This article is the most recent effort to establish the differences that may exist between freetures and some other popular designations.



Freebies

We all know what freebies are. Despite how you spell them, freebies or freebees, they seem to conjure up the image of things that are not going to cost us any money, labor or other expense although we will most likely spend some of our valuable time waiting on a line at the donors place of business or residence if offline and maybe an embedded link to the donor's site if online, (strings attached comes to mind).

So, since an enhancement is defined as the "act of improving" something, and the synonyms to it are "add-on", "extra", "option" and "value-added", the next word in that sequence could well be "freeture" because all those adjectives in addition to the actual description of an enhancement found in the thesaurus adequately describes what a freeture is.

The Objective

The question therefore is why do we need another descriptive word to add meaning to items already being described? The answer to that question would serve to fill a void when the subject is related to the "value" of the enhancement so capably defined. The thesaurus mentions nothing about the value of the item. Only that there is "value-added". A freeture's value is determined in accordance with a very simple equation created solely for that purpose, so that it can be recorded in number form thereby permitting sellers as well as purchasers to claim equity in the freetured package(s).

Benefit

We have all heard the question asked with some degree of consternation; "Would you buy a used car from that man?" The answer would depend on what value, if any, was derived from the person in question but more importantly, what harm was previously done by that man in the name of "add-value", "enhancements" "extra", "option(s)" and the "act of improving". You'll find that in many cases, notwithstanding the attempt at humor, there is reason for the skeptism which may be based in chicanery, dishonesty, fraud, crookedness, hanky-panky, subterfuge, trickery, double dealing and a host of other descriptions that I cannot use here, but you get the picture.

The point is this. If you are encouraged to make a purchase based upon something extra that is being offered, not only should you know the true value of the item being sold, but you should also have a clear "value-description" of the "extra". That's the function of a freeture. The benefit could be a very small, but when it really matters, freetures could go a long way in alleviating a lot of unwanted stress and loss in our lives.

Evaluation

It is my belief that when an item is manufactured for production and distribution, one of the first duties of the producer is to place a value on that item. The same is true for a service that is created in order to address many of the problems we face in today's world, especially in industrialized/technological societies.

The attorney sets a fee, the insurer sets a premium and the professor becomes tenured. All valuable and designed to address pressing needs in our society. All are subject to provide added-value/enhancements at one time or another. What is the number? The percentage? What is the FPVR (Freeture to Package Value Ratio). The family news continues for Mindy McCready.

On the same day she insisted that, despite reports, she did not kidnap her 5-year-old son Zander, a rep for the troubled country singer confirms to PEOPLE that McCready, 36, is five months pregnant with twins.

According to reports, the father of the babies-to-be is unknown.



Police say that McCready and her son disappeared after she picked him up from her father's house in Cape Coral, Fla., on Tuesday. The songstress, who has a history of suicide attempts, a jail visit and a stint in rehab, does not have custody of Zander, but she does have visitation privileges.

"I am working with lawyers to try to get all this straightened out, she told Access Hollywood on Wednesday. "I did not steal my child, as it would be impossible for me to kidnap what already belongs to me! There never was any missing persons report and never an Amber Alert."

Lets say youre a newbie to the world of online sales and are looking to make money online, but youre starting with a small startup budget. With the blinding wealth of information available for new business owners, knowing how to spend your limited funds can be a bit intimidating.

Here is a five-step checklist to help get you started and guide you toward success.

1. Spend time getting feedback on what youre selling before launching.

Dont rely on affirmation from friends and family to validate that you have a unique and salable product or service. Chances are, these people are emotionally attached to you, and theyre more likely to think every idea you share is the greatest thing since Nutella. Getting feedback from people who are emotionally attached to you is a disaster from the start, says Adam Callinan, founder of BottleKeeper.

Get market validation from potential customers who arent in your social circle. Some entrepreneurs use the will they pull out their wallet test before investing money in a business. If youre just starting out, surveys are a chance to find out what the customer is hoping the product/service will solve or do for him or her. If youre already in business, surveys can ask how the customer found out about the product or service, whether the customer is willing to be a return customer and why.

Or if youre in a job in the industry you plan on starting a business in, get feedback from your manager and clients, says Steve Tobak, founder of Invisor Consulting.

2. Have a website.

You must have a website, says Joel Widmer, founder of Fluxe Digital Marketing. Not only for the obvious -- to have something to refer customers back to -- but having a website builds your brands digital footprint. Keep your site simple and copy-driven with opportunities for email captures on every page.

Three easy steps to having your own website to sell products without spending a lot of cash are:

Select a content management system (CMS), such as WordPress, which is popular for its user friendliness and is free. Register a domain name and subscribe to a hosting service, such as GoDaddy or Bluehost. Customize your CMS with ecommerce-enabling plugins and themes WooCommerce offers free ecommerce themes for WordPress, such as Storefront. Also, WP eCommerce and MarketPress are additional free ecommerce plugin options.

Other free research tools to get to know your market, suggests Brandon Schaefer, CEO of MyVirtualSalesForce, are LinkedIn (to see who competitor brands are connecting with and what types of updates they're posting), Google Alerts (for brand mentions and keywords) and Google Trends.

4. Create an action plan for sales and marketing.

To earn your first million in sales, says Patel, work backwards and put a number on what it takes in monthly revenue to get to a million your first year -- meaning how many units, subscriptions or services must be sold. Create benchmarks to reach. Even if you dont reach them, you have a blueprint.

One way to reach your goal is to figure out which marketing avenues to leverage. Given the wealth of social-media possibilities, start with one or two social-media outlets where you know your audience is. In general, for new products the best channels are Facebook and Pinterest, says Widmer. For expertise and services, try LinkedIn.

Also, two effective and free marketing strategies are blogging on your own site and guest blogging on complementary sites. This strategy helps build content and a digital footprint for your brand, says Widmer. For guidance on what hot topics to blog about, Buzzsumo, a free web service, allows you to input any domain or topic and get a list of the 10 most popular related posts at the moment. It can also inform you of what popular sites to hit up for guest blogging.

Should you guest blog, use the opportunity to lead users back to your site and capture emails, says Widmer. One way to do so is to use a call to action -- where you offer the reader something of value, such as a free how-to eBook or a must-have checklist -- that the user can get or download by going back to your website and providing an email address.

Some other marketing tools? The free KingSumo app allows you to capture email subscribers through giveaways; Facebook Ads start at $1; and the e-newsletter tool MailChimp has a free option and is drag-and-drop easy.

Where banks really make money on IPOs

Every time an IPO has a big pop on its opening day, the same tired debate gets reprised: did the investment banks leading the deal rip off the company raising equity capital? The arguments on both sides are well rehearsed I covered them myself in no little detail, for instance, after LinkedIn went public, in 2011.

Back then, I had sympathy with the bankers:

If the large 7% fee does anything, it aligns the banks interests with the issuers. If the banks felt they could make millions more dollars for themselves just by raising the offering price, its reasonable to assume that they would have done so. Im sure that the institutions which were granted IPO access are grateful to the banks for the money they made, but that gratitude isnt worth a ten-figure sum to the ECM divisions of the banks in question.

Today, however, I have to take all of that back. And its all thanks to Joe Nocera, who has a great column this weekend, where he uncovers a bunch of documents in one of those interminable securities lawsuits against Goldman Sachs. The documents should have been sealed; they werent. And now, thanks to Nocera, we can all see exactly where Goldman makes its money, when it comes to IPOs. (Its fantastic that he put those documents online, although its hard to read them in the browser; heres the download link which the NYT weirdly removed from its own site.)

The lawsuit in question concerns the IPO of eToys, back in 1999. The company sold 8.2 million shares, raising $164 million; Goldmans 7% fee on that amount comes to $11.5 million. If Goldman had sold the shares at $37 rather than $20, it would have received an extra $10 million and what bank would willingly leave $10 million on the table?

What Nocera has discovered, however, is that Goldman was not leaving $10 million on the table. Instead, it was making more than that much more in kickbacks from the clients to whom it allocated hot eToys stock.



Goldman carefully calculated the first-day gains reaped by its investment clients. After compiling the numbers in something it called a trade-up report, the Goldman sales force would call on clients, show them how much they had made from Goldmans I.P.O.s and demand that they reward Goldman with increased business. It was not unusual for Goldman sales representatives to ask that 30 to 50 percent of the first-day profits be returned to Goldman via commissions, according to depositions given in the case.

eToys opened at $78 per share, which meant that Goldmans clients were sitting on a profit of $475 million the minute that the stock started trading on the open market. In most cases, the clients cashed out which was smart, because eToys didnt stay at those levels for long. But if Goldman got back 40% of those profits in trading commissions, then it made $190 million in commissions, compared to that $11.5 million in fees.

If Goldman had raised the IPO price to $37 per share, then yes its fee income would have gone up by $10 million, to $21.5 million. But assuming the stock would still have opened at $78 its clients opening-tick profits would have come down to $336 million, and Goldmans 40% share of that would also have come down, to $135 million. Total income to Goldman? $156.5 million, rather than $201.5 million. If the IPO price were higher, Goldmans total take would have gone down by about $45 million.

All of these numbers are hypothetical, of course, but the bigger point is simple: if Goldman manages to get kickbacks, in terms of extra commissions, of more than 7% of its clients profits, then it has a financial incentive to underprice the IPO. And Goldmans clients were desperate to give it kickbacks: they didnt just route their standard trading through Goldman, since that wouldnt generate enough commissions. Instead, they bought and sold stocks on the same day, at the same price. Capstar Holding, for instance, bought 57,000 shares in Seagram Ltd at $50.13 per share on June 21, 1999 and then sold them, on the same day, at the same price. Capstar made nothing on the trade, but Goldman made a commission of $5,700. Capstars Christopher Rule says that in May 1999, fully 70% of all of his trading activity was done solely for the purpose of generating commissions, so that he could continue to keep on getting IPO allocations.

Goldman, of course, revealed none of this to eToys. Instead, they pitched eToys with a presentation saying, on its first page, in big underlined type, eToys Interests Will Always Come First. On the page headlined IPO Pricing Dynamics, they explained that the IPO should be price at a 10-15% discount to the expected fully distributed trading level which means not to the opening price, necessarily, but rather to the trading value 1-3 months after the offering. After all, this was the dot-com boom: everybody knew that IPOs were games to be played for fun and profit, and that the first-day price was a very bad price-discovery mechanism.

If you look at the chart of what happened to the eToys share price in the first few months after the IPO, the price fluctuated around $40 a share which means that by Goldmans own standards, it really ought to have priced the IPO much closer to $37 than to $20. And this was no idiosyncratic mistake on Goldmans part: Goldmans other IPOs all fit the same pattern. For instance, look at the three deals run by Lawton Fitt, the Goldman executive in charge of the deal, before the eToys IPO. First was pcOrder, which went public at $21 and opened at $55.25. Then there was iVillage: that went public at $24, and opened at $95.88. Finally, there was Portal Software, which went public at 414 and opened at $36. When eToys went public at $20, Fitt knew exactly what was going to happen: indeed, she bet her colleagues that eToys stock would hit $80 on the opening day. She knew her market: it actually traded as high as $85.

Some big names jump out from the documents here none more so than Bob Steel, who was then Goldmans co-head of equity sales, and who went on to put out financial-crisis fires for Hank Paulson at Treasury before going on to become the CEO of Wachovia. Steel wrote a detailed email to Tim Ferguson, the chief investment strategist at Putnam Investments, saying that he would try to help Putnam out with regard to IPO allocations. At the same time, however, he added that we should be rewarded with additional secondary business for offering access to capital markets product. Which, in English, means that if Putnam got access to Goldmans IPOs, it would have to steer more soft-dollar commissions to Goldman.

Meanwhile, if you didnt toe the investment banks line, they would cut you. Toby Lenk was the CEO of eToys, and in a 2006 deposition he was asked whether he ever voiced any displeasure with Goldman about the fact that they left so much money on the table. He said no and added a little story about why it was never a good idea to annoy a big investment bank. In 2000, Lenk explained, when eToys was desperate for money, it raised some cash through a convertible debt offering:

We initially selected Merrill Lynch to be our lead convertible debt underwriter, and Goldman Sachs came in and put a strong foot forward to take that away, and Merrill Lynch we kept as a secondary underwriter in the secondary position and kept them in the deal. They were in the deal, and I believe it was the morning of the deal going into the marketplace, or the night before, or right around that time, Merrill Lynchs lead internet analyst, Henry Blodget, downgraded our stock as that was going into the marketplace, and made it extremely difficult for that placement to happen.

The investment banks have punitive power over us. We need them to raise capital. You dont go complaining to investment banks because they will crush you, and that is a perfect example. We got penalized by Merrill Lynch. We got slapped hard, and it nearly sank that offering, and I can tell you that nearly sank the company.

This is just hackers game the flipside of pumping up companies in order to get investment banking business: if you lose that business, then you do the opposite, and downgrade the company just when doing so causes the most pain. As a result, as Lenk says, you didnt cross the bankers and you certainly didnt cross Goldman.

All of which puts Goldmans 7% fee into very interesting perspective. Goldman likely made much much more money on the eToys IPO from its buy-side clients than it did from eToys itself. Indeed, it could have offered to run the IPO for free, the IPO would still have been very lucrative for Goldman. But of course eToys would never have given Goldman the IPO mandate if Goldman had offered to run it for free because then it would have been obvious where Goldmans loyalties resided.

The real purpose of the 7% fee, it seems, was to make eToys think that it had hired Goldman and that Goldman was working for eToys and also to tie eToys into a close relationship with Goldman. (Lenk, for instance, became a personal client of Goldman Sachs shortly after the IPO.) As Andrew Clavell once put it:

If you claim you do know where the fees are, banks want you as a customer. You dont know. Really, you dont. Hang on, I hear you shouting that youre actually smarter than that, so you do know. Read carefully: Listen. Buster. You. Dont. Know.

The 7% fee is a very large shiny object, which diverts everybodys attention from where the real money is made or at least did, back in 1999. Have things changed since then? Heres Nocera:

The documents are old. Some will dismiss them as relics of another era. But I continue to believe that the mind-set created by the I.P.O. madness of the late 1990s never really went away. To this day, an I.P.O. with a big first-day jump is considered a success, even though the company is being short-shrifted. To this day, investors know that they are expected to find ways to reward the firms that allocate them hot I.P.O. shares. The only thing that is truly different today is that few on Wall Street are so foolish as to put such sentiments in an e-mail.

Thats the one point at which Im willing to disagree with Nocera. Nothing ever changes much on Wall Street, including the degree of professional foolishness. Im sure if a determined prosecutor went hunting for similar emails today, she could probably find them. But I dont know what the point would be. Because theres nothing illegal about asking buy-side clients to send commission revenue your way or even about explaining to them how much money youve helped them make. eToys creditors might ultimately win this case against Goldman, or they might not, or the two sides might settle. But whatever happens, the implications for sell-side equity capital markets desks will be minuscule. Because the amount of money theyre making right now will always dwarf any potential litigation risk 15 years down the road.

Just grab theField Agent app(Android, Apple; Free) and create a profile. Then do a few fast "screener" jobs that open up certain types of work. It could be taking pictures of your pet or the kind of beer you drink.

Once you're approved,you'll be able to take real jobs. These pay from $2 to $12 a task, which might not sound like much, but if you're already at the store or it's something you can do at home, it's no big deal.

Payments are sent though PayPal or Dwolla, so you will need a free account with one of them.Field Agent says it's paid out over $4.5 million to agents so far. Some of that could be yours if you get going now.

3. Get cash back for shopping

Shopping is something you have to do, so why not get some money back on products you've purchased? No, I'm not talking about mail-in rebates, which take forever and can be hit or miss.

The Ibottaapp (Android, Apple; Free) gives you instant rebates on items you buy. You can use it at stores like Walmart, Target, Kroger, Safeway, Costco, Sam's Club and many more. Plus, it works for online stores like Amazon and many retailers' online shops.You can even use it on top of other coupons, promo codes and discounts for extra savings.

The money you get back from Ibotta can transfer to your bank account as cash via PayPal or Venmo. Or you can turn it into gift cards for Best Buy, Starbucks, iTunes, Amazon and more online places you or your family like to shop.

It might sound too good to be true, but it works. In fact, Ibotta says it's the 16th most-used app in the U.S. Plus, it's free, so you have nothing to lose.

4. Get your expenses reimbursed

Forfrequent business travelers, or for freelance and contract workers, expenses are a big deal. You're spending your money and trusting that your company or the client is going to pay you back (or you're hoping the money you spent on the company's dime doesn't get taken out of your pocket). Ifyour paperwork isn't ship-shape, you could end up losing big.

You need a foolproof and easy way to prove to the company or client that you actually spent the money, and that's usually a receipt. But who wants to collect and carry around a stack of receipts?

TheExpensifyapp (Android, Apple, Windows Phone; Free) is the answer. It automatically creates reports right from the photo of a receipt. You can track the hours you worked with a tap, and it also tracks mileage using GPS or with a picture of the car's odometer.

Expensify will link up with your bank account or credit card to pull transactions that don't have a receipt. It can even generate IRS-guaranteed eReceipts. Finally, it's compatible with major accounting software for easy report submission, or you can create a PDF to submit.

5. Give your opinion and get money

Whether it's a product, brand, movie, TV show, government policy or something else, I'm sure you have an opinion on something. Nowyou can get rewardedfor sharing that opinion.

The market-research company Ipsos operates a service calledi-Say. After you sign up, it will send yousurveys about a wide range of topics.The average user gets about eight surveys per month.

You can sign up to get email notifications, or you can occasionally check the website. To access and fill out surveys, you can log in to the i-Say site on your computer, smartphone or tablet.

Every complete survey gives you reward points you can use to exchange for gift cards or products at major retailers. Plus, every survey you finish gets you an entry into a drawing for prizes like overseas vacations, TVs, iPads, gift cards and more.

Ipsosis very clear that you won't get rich with i-Say, but it is good for a little extra spending money. You might also be a lucky winner and get a gift card or that gadget you were saving up for.

What it's like working at Costco to hand out those free samples

How many of you go to Costco primarily to eat all the free samples that you can ? Be honest now. People may take more food samples than items to purchase.

My friend Alex worked as a Product Distributor for Costco in Danville. He was out of work, had no unemployment and from what it looked like as a shopper, a fun job.

He lasted about six weeks. Since you had to stand in one place, it puts a lot of pressure on your lower back and he would spend his break relaxing in one of the recliner chairs in a different part of the store, which to him seemed like lying in the clouds.

The day began with a quick meeting in the back of the store where you get your product for the day from your supervisor. He would locate a cart, fill it up with a table, a cover, signs and plenty of packages of the item. At the end of the day of course you had to load everything back in the cart, clean the dishes and return it to the back.



He found that certain foods like chicken, any meat and chips with a dip went fast. He sometimes could barely keep enough on the table for the next customer. In fact a team lead would cruise the store to make sure you didn't keep anyone waiting. Woe to you if your table was empty and customers were lined up.

It was common to see people come back three, four, even five times in an hour. Let's face it with tables around the store, you can have a free lunch there. You would be situated near the product you were giving away, so you could point out to people, if you like it, we have them right over there.

The pay was $9.00 an hour. No commission on anything, even if people bought dozens of the product while you were giving out the goodies.

There was a mat to stand on as you stood behind the table, to ease the pressure on your back, but everyone that worked there seemed to tell you to move around and stretch. H eventually left the position partly because of his back getting sore every day and sometimes the lead would come around and tell him to get those samples on the table quicker. This wasn't a position where you could stroll around and come back. You had to always wait for that one customer.

Also he mentioned this was not a job per se with Costco, but another company that placed the people there.
